Lots of people have asked, “Is dip bad for you?”
In fact, every month over 500 people in the US ask Google that exact question, which means a lot of people don’t know about the dangers of chewing tobacco or dip.
Is dip bad for you?
Although smokeless tobacco is “relatively” less lethal, it is still an unsafe alternative to smoking. First, dippers get the same amount of nicotine as regular smokers, so it’s easy to get addicted. Second, smokeless tobacco contains over 30 different chemicals that are known to cause cancer.
Effects of Dipping
Addiction
Since smokeless tobacco contains nicotine, and nicotine is a highly addictive substance, it’s very easy to get addicted to dip, just like with cigarettes. The level of nicotine circulating in your bloodstream from dipping is as high as it is in those who smoke cigarettes. Since most dippers tend to use tobacco more consistently than smokers, they actually get exposed to HIGHER levels of nicotine, which may result in higher levels of dependency.
Dipping Can Cause Cancer
Some of the most harmful cancer-causing substance contained in smokeless tobacco are the TSNAs (tobacco-specific nitrosamines.) The level of TSNAs found in dips varies from brand to brand. However, you should know that the higher the TSNA level, the higher your risk of getting cancer. The cancers linked to the use of dip include:
- Pancreatic cancer
- Esophagus cancer
- Mouth, cheek, tongue and gum cancer
Precancerous Mouth Lesions
Dipping increases your risk of developing precancerous leukoplakia—small white patches—inside your mouth.
Heart Disease and Stroke
Some types of dip raise your blood pressure and heart rate. There is evidence supporting that increased use of dip increases your chances of stroke or heart disease.
Pregnancy Risks
Studies show that the consistent use of smokeless tobacco in women increases the risk of stillbirths, heart rate variability in infants, and low birth weight.
Oral Disease
Dips contain irritants that can cause gum disease, teeth staining, cavities, tooth loss, among other oral health issues. Smokeless tobacco also causes gum loss, and your gums don’t grow back after dipping.
